Historical Romance Books – Free & Bargain Priced!

Historical Romance books have a long history within the romance fiction genre – from Walter Scott through Jane Austin (and the Brontes) to Jean Plaidy and beyond. With the continued popularity of Jane Austin and the Brontes, among ‘ordinary’ readers (not just academics and literature students) there remains a huge appetite for stories of love and romance in exotic, and historic settings – with all the accompanying difficulties of etiquette and circumstance. Whilst contemporary life allows a great deal of freedom to pursue your heart, historical settings provide those barriers to love which make such classics as Pride and Prejudice and, of course, Romeo and Juliet, classics! For a particular type of romance novel, only a journey back in history can provide just the right mix of difficulty and passion to satisfy!

The historical romance book genre has expanded to include just about every historic period imaginable, and heroes and heroines of every class, tribe, and nationality: the romance reader can choose from multiple categories such as: Ancient World romances; Medieval Historical Romances; Regency Romances; Historical Scottish Romances; and Victorian Romances – all with multiple sub-genres.

Many add to the reader’s entertainment value by being set among great events of history, and using the drama of those events to accentuate and develop the main love story. The ‘escapist’ and ‘fantasy’ element of romance novels is clearly at work here – and much of the enjoyment comes from following and empathising with the internal difficulties of the characters, fighting for their love against mores and values of their times, which are long since dissappeared in the modern world, but somehow felt or projected onto the readers own, individual circumstances.

‘Love’ is still the name of the game, here, but for added interest, excitement and challenge – take a trip back in time and se how love survives!
