Cozy Mysteries – Free & Bargain Priced!

For those who enjoy working a puzzle, figuring out a problem or solving a mystery, but without the ghastliness of many modern mystery books – with all their blood, horror, sex and violence – the cozy mysteries genre of books is just the right ‘cup of tea’… their inherent lightness of touch and simplicity of approach has developed a huge following over recent years as they focus on the problem at hand, rather than the screwed up minds of the latest killer, or protagonist.

When I think of cozy mystery books, I tend to think immediately of the actress Joan Hickson, who played Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple in a long running TV series made by the BBC. Or Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher, in the long running CBS TV series of Murder, She Wrote. (In fact, Angela Lansbury also played Miss Marple in the 1980 movie ‘The Mirror Crack’d‘) But the cozy mystery fiction genre is larger than either of these immense examples.

Cozy Mystery books are fundamentally an enjoyable experience, some light but ‘fun’ reading that engages, and occasionally challenges, the mind, but doesn’t disturb the senses, or provoke great emotion. They’re essentially a throw-back to an earlier time, a sort of homage to the Golden Age of Detective Fiction – such as Agatha Christie, but also Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and other British writers of the 1920’s and 1930’s such as Dorothy L. Sayers, and Ellery Queen, all of which went on to inspire the American writers such as Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett.

Although characters aren’t restricted to ‘English Aunt’ types, or solitary bachelors brooding over puzzles – the genre has broadened considerably over the years and welcomes in pets of all kinds – dogs, cats, and mice – as well as a varying variety of specialist chefs, artists and paranormal characters to act as chief investigator. The best cozy mysteries are great entertainment of a most imaginative and quite escapist character!
