Christian Fiction – Free & Bargain Priced!

In some ways it’s difficult to distinguish between what is a Christian Fiction Book and, say, a fiction book. After all, if we’re reading books that are written in the English language, and written by a native English speaker who was born and raised in a western, English speaking — and, therefore, Christian — country, surely all fiction, all novels, are ‘Christian’ by default. Just one look at the ‘canon’ of literature which includes Chaucer, Shakespeare, Dickens… and you will immediately spot classic Christian fiction. So why do we have a separate category for it? Why is there a separate genre?

What will I find in a ‘Christian Fiction’ Book?

Christian Fiction will expound and illustrate a Christian world view in its plot, its characters, or both, and deals with Christian themes in a positive way.

Christian novels have a long tradition in Europe, going back several centuries. Some twentieth century proponents of the Christian novel in English include J.R.R. Tolkien, G. K. Chesterton, C.S. Lewis, and Madeleine L’Engle. But many novels with Christian themes also fall into other genres. For example, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is considered mainstream fantasy, while Julian May’s Galactic Milieu Series is seen as mainstream science fiction, in spite of the references to the work of Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Similarly, G. K. Chesterton’s Father Brown stories are mainstream detective fiction, even though the main character is a Catholic priest

C.S. Lewis is said to have resisted the label ‘Christian’ for his novels, arguing that he was simply writing a story, and it should be taken as such. But whatever his intention, his writing came from of his unquestioning belief and understanding of God, and that can be seen quite clearly, by his readers.

Good fiction, whether or not it is identified as Christian, will provide a memorable reading experience that captures the imagination, challenges, inspires, and educates. But fiction published for the Christian book market comes with an additional purpose. It rarely includes a gratuitous demonstration of sin—bad language, violence, sexual conduct, etc. Of course, believable characters will sin, but a Christian novel’s presentation of the grit and grime of human circumstance doesn’t present examples for their own sake, or to titillate, or entertain.

Readers who select a Christian novel to read, are looking for something specific. Although it’s true that most writers in English come from a christian society, their Christianity may not be behind their impulse to write, or the driving force behind the subject matter, or characters, of their novels. But a Christian novelist places their belief and understanding in god, and in their christian beliefs, first and foremost in their literary creation.
